#1 REMINDER! UU EcoMinds Meeting Jan 19

THURSDAY, JAN 19, 2006
7:00 -- 9:00 pm
White Bear Lake UU Church
328 Maple Street
Mahtomedi, MN

1) INFLUENCE UUA STANCE ON GLOBAL WARMING
The current draft Statement of Conscience calls for more nuclear energy.
Do you agree? Disagree?
Find out how you can respond to the UUA
statement of conscience draft on Global Warming.

READ AHEAD: Check out these two websites:
www.uua.org/cwa/threatofgw.html Has the official current draft

www.uuministryforearth.org Has a thorough response/alternative to the current draft

2) HELP PASS THE RENEWABLE ELECTRICITY STANDARD:
Help organize or sign up for door-knocking events
(Feb 11, Feb 25, & Mar 11) to educate and advocate for RES in key legislative
precincts.

3) GET TOOLS TO LAUNCH A CONGREGATION-BASED EMISSIONS-REDUCTION EFFORT
Switching to compact fluorescent bulbs and buying
"green energy" are two easy ways people
can make a huge reduction in their CO2 emissions.

Find out what some congregations are doing to encourage UU all over to take these
steps.
Sample table displays, info about green-energy programs,
and materials you need to start a campaign, or to sign up yourself!

4) Extras: Should we join the Twin Cities Climate Crisis Coalition?
What about proposed new coal plants? What news do YOU have
to share?

FFI: Contact Co-chairs Madalyn Cioci at mcioci [at] earthlink.net, 612-926-5249

#2 Feb 11 & 25, Mar 11: SAVE THESE DATES for RES Doorknocking in key precincts

UU EcoMinds are on the move. Mark your calendar now!
***Sat. Feb. 11
***Sat. Feb. 25
***Sat. Mar 11
(times and meeting locations TBA)

People who know about the Renewable Energy Standard, WANT the Renewable
Energy Standard. Our job is to help more people know about it!

As part of our campaign for passage of the RES, UU EcoMinds has worked with
ME3 and Clean Water Action to develop 3 days of very important
and still low-key, friendly doorknocking in key precincts in Minnetonka
and White Bear Lake.

We'll have quick training before each day, provide all the materials you need,
and send you out with a partner. No prior experience needed, just a willingness to
talk to fellow Minnesotans about issues you care about.

We've taken the lead on this, and will be inviting Clean Water Action, ME3 and
and Congregations Caring for Creation members to join us.

Why February? Because the legislative session begins March 1.
Fighting global warming takes a little commitment, and a warm coat.

#3 Jan 24: MPCA Citizen Board meeting about mercury regulation

Tues. Jan 24, 2006
12:30-2 p.m.
Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA)
520 Lafayette Road
St. Paul, MN 55155-4194
651-296-6300, 800-657-3864,

Did you know that besides causing much of our CO2 emissions,
coal burning also causes almost 50% of our state's mercury pollution?
Yes, when it comes to coal, global warming and mercury pollution go hand in hand.

The Minnesota Citizens' Board has an opportunity to direct the
MPCA to put a real mercury reduction plan in place! Maybe that
plan should include insistence on more clean, renewably-generated energy!
