Late at night the Governor eliminates health care program for the poorest

Late in the night Thursday, Governor Pawlenty line item vetoed the
funding
for the General Assistance Medical Care Program, which provides health
care
coverage for 30,000 people a month. They are men and women all without
children -- who are very poor, are disabled, homeless or are elderly
Minnesotans receiving treatment for kidney failure. He vetoed a tax bill
last week that would have made such a drastic move unnecessary a tax
bill
that would have asked the wealthiest Minnesotans to pay their fair share,
would have taxed alcohol purchases and would have taxed credit card
companies that charge excessively high interest rates.

The move appears to be a dare. His veto letter reads that this will not
occur immediately and ³as a result, the Legislature will have an
opportunity
to address this change further if it chooses.² And that is even more
troubling: the lives of these 30,000 Minnesotans are just the game
pieces
for political gambles. He is betting that Minnesotans are willing to cast
these people off even further to the margins of our communities.

If you are troubled: make sure the Governor and your legislator know.
You can reach the Governor at: tim.pawlenty [at] state.mn.us
<mailto:tim.pawlenty [at] state.mn.us> or 651-296-3351 (toll free at
1-800-657-3717).
Find out the contact information for your legislator at
http://www.gis.leg.mn/mapserver/districts/ (it is quick and easy).

Resources to make your message even stronger: A website and a very moving
video
If you e-mail them, send them a link to www.aboutusall.org
<http://www.aboutusall.org/> and add a story to that map if you have
not
done so.

And here is a video featuring Minnesotans from all walks of life
explaining
why they believe taxes and not devastating cuts like the ones the
Governor
has set in motion are necessary: http://www.investinmn.org
<http://www.investinmn.org/> .

Forward both links to people you know who share your values who do not
believe Minnesotans abandon each other for the price of a few cents on a
bottle of wine.
