Dear Jo,

It hurts me every time I see my thirteen year old daughter realize that
her family is not equal in this land. Watching her learn, over and over,
what I have known for decades-that equality is still a dream for lesbian,
gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people in the United States of
America-makes it freshly painful for me each time. ?

Please sign this petition calling for full and equal protection under the
law for LGBT people.

My daughter has heard gay and lesbian soldiers describe the terror each
day they serve, wondering if it will be their last. She sees every day at
her school how bullies use homophobia as the ultimate putdown, and how
often the teachers ignore it. She knows that my best friend, a fantastic
teacher, is afraid that she will lose her job if she comes out at work.
She knows another close friend has to choose between living with her
partner of ten years in another country, or moving back to the U.S. and
leaving that partner behind, because of discriminatory immigration
laws.??

It's time for kids like my daughter, families like mine, employees like
my best friend, every person regardless of sexual and gender orientation,
to be fully protected in every state and every statute.??

The Standing on the Side of Love Campaign is launching a petition for
full equality for people like me and families like mine. We will use it
throughout the year as we push for specific legal advancements, being the
Employment Non-Discrimination Act, and the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't
Tell, and of the Defense of Marriage Act. ??

We will lift it up particularly to federal lawmakers on October 11, which
is National Coming Out Day and also, this year, a date when people across
the nation will demand full equality for LGBT people. ??

Please sign this petition today. We want to be able to say to lawmakers
that we know, with certainty, that thousands of Americans share our
passion for full equality. Your willingness to stand on the side of love
will build the national will to finally achieve what has been a dream for
families like mine for too long: Full equality under the law; nothing
more and nothing less.??

Will you stand with me? If so, please sign the petition!

Love,
Meg
