EXPLORING SEXUALITY IN RELIGIOUS TRADITIONS: THE JOURNAL OF INTER- RELIGIOUS DIALOGUE(TM) RELEASES ITS SECOND ISSUE

October 6, 2009. The Editorial team at the Journal of Inter- Religious Dialogue has furthered its contention that collaborative leadership and radical inclusion makes for compelling and engaging scholarship, with the release of its second issue, "Engaging the Taboo: Gender, Sexuality, and the Body in Our Religious Traditions." The journal's young Editors-in-Chief, Joshua Stanton and Stephanie Hughes, realized that the topic of sexuality in different traditions would make for an issue both timely and enriching. The frontispiece of this issue is an initial article on celibacy in the Roman Catholic tradition, with responses from a Muslim scholar, a Dominican nun, a Hindu swami, and a Protestant theologian. Other articles in this issue cover topics including the Black church's response to the HIV/AIDS crisis and the intersection of Byzantine art and Tibetan images. Says Stanton, "Gender and sexuality lie in the subtext of so many conversations-even those inter-religious in nature -- but seldom are discussed explicitly." Adds Hughes, "We wanted to give academics and religious practitioners alike the opportunity to share their work on these topics -- and hope it fuels some interesting dialogue."

Since its founding in the summer of 2008, the Journal has received an enthusiastic response from readers, scholars, the media, and religious leaders on six continents. The Board of Scholars and Practitioners of the Journal contains broad representation of academic disciplines, non-profit work, and activism, including Swami Tyaganada, Hindu Chaplain at Harvard University, Edward Kessler, Director, Woolf Institute of Abrahamic Faiths and Fellow of Cambridge University, Burton Visotzky, Appleman Professor of Midrash and Interreligious Studies at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, Eboo Patel, Executive Director of the Interfaith Youth Core, and Sheryl Kujawa-Holbrook, Professor of Practical Theology and Religious Education at the Claremont School of Theology.

A unique inter-generational staff of graduate students, seminarians, and experienced scholars and religious leaders bolsters the Journal and ensures that new ideas are brought to the table, while time-tested methods for research and standards of academic rigor are upheld. The staff itself demonstrates that opening dialogue to new participants within the context of a rigorous academic forum cultivates innovative writing and perspective.

The Journal of Inter-Religious Dialogue offers a novel way to establish long-term dialogue and collaboration between religious communities. Its second peer-reviewed issue is now available online via its free web platform at www.irdialogue.org.
