Personal: This is especially sad for me since two close friends -- and
mentors -- now exist only in memory (Peter having preceded Alice in
death). Peter headed the National Opinion Research Center at the
University of Chicago when I was developing the survey questionnaire
for US and Canadian Unitarian Universalists in 1966. We garnered
12,000+ lengthy returns from a careful sample -- then the largest
existing denominational survey. Alice was a continual adviser --
especially on the sexuality and gender questions. She developed the
still-used scale of justification items for abortions that we
pioneered. The published results (with some scanning errors) can be
found on my website.
