As we try to comprehend the health bill that squeaked through the House, we once again need to look for the complex roles that faiths play in US life (pace Harris and Hitchens). Do liberal forms of religions embody the possible future for all of us OR do they simply front for the atavistic majorities of old forms?

Peter Laarman is a major spokesman for <progressive> Christianity. His reflections thus come with some authority.
Key quote

I see two powerful but (to my mind) quite errant forms of Christianity, both running with their heads down against progressive health reform from different directions and both leaving big nasty bruises in the body of what remains.

His whole article deserves a close read, along with the articles linked in the Tikkun Daily below.

Reactions to the House Victory
Nov 08, 2009 11:46 am | Dave Belden
I am finding I go first these days to Open Left. In a post by Adam Green: Tonight was the opposite of a “bold progressive” night. With a huge majority in the House, a vote with only 219 Dems should have been because progressives pushed this bill to the limit. Instead, it was watered-down, watered-down, watered-down. ...
