MESSAGE: PEACE e*lert from our community partner the PEACE Foundation:

Peace Vigil
Sunday, February 28, 2010 • 2PM • 3800 block of Dupont Ave N

Please join the PEACE Foundation, MAD DADS, North Minneapolis neighbors and
family members of Drew "Eagle Child" Heinkel (25), for a community vigil to
honor his life and the life of our community.

Tragically, Drew, also proudly known by his American Indian name “Eagle Child,”
was stabbed to death a week ago in North Minneapolis. He was the cities’ 9th
homicide victim. And more importantly, he was a beloved son, brother, friend
and father as evidenced by the over 500 people who attended his wake.

His mom Kristy and Aunt Mindy believe that he will be remembered for his
incredible smile, which lit up every room, as well as, his humor and compassion.

Always the life of the party, Drew made everyone laugh, no matter the
situation. He was always pulling jokes on his family members, often pinning
them down while smothering them with kisses until they couldn’t take it any
longer. And he was compassionate- often seeking out the girl in the room that
no one was talking to, to make her feel special.

And although he was not without the familiar problems that plague and put at
risk, too many young men of color in our community, it was evident that Drew
was determined to change his life and to do better for himself, his family and
his one-year old son. In fact he was scheduled to start Barber school in Waite
Park, MN just a month before his death. Upon completion of his program he was
looking forward to a chair in Sportsman Barber shop in Columbia Heights
promised by the owner there who commented that he saw something in Drew and
wanted to help.

The Vigil will take place on Sunday, February 28th, at 2pm on the 3800 block of
Dupont Ave N.

Warmly,

Sondra Samuels
