ACT FOR IRAQI PEACE AND SELF-RULE
Monday, April 12th, 2004

Dear Friends,
Please join FNVW and EPIC call the President, your US Senators and
Congressmember today or tomorrow. Urge them to:

- Hand over Pentagon control of the occupation to the UN, and support a
strong, unambiguous UN mandate to establish security in Iraq,
- oversee reconstruction that employs Iraqi labor and contractors wherever
possible, and carry out fair, national elections in Iraq in 2005.
- Hold immediate, local elections in Iraq - at the neighborhood, municipal
and provincial levels.

This is a course to peace, rather than "pacification". These steps will help
to correct one year of grave mismanagement of the US occupation, and address
the following causes of violence in Iraq:

Violent retaliation to insurgent attack kills more innocent civilians,
creates martyrs and fuels violent opposition to US occupation. Iraqis fought
British occupation after their "liberation" from the Ottoman Empire for 36
years, and will stop resisting occupation only when real steps are in place
that lead to authentic self-rule. US troops are not trained or prepared for
reconstruction or peacekeeping. They are combat troops. They are trained to
respond to attack with overwhelming violence. Historically, this creates as
many, if not more, guerrillas as it kills. The Pentagon's monopoly of power
in Iraq - from awarding contracts to appointing Governing Council members -
is a conflict of interest that vindicates suspicions that US policy in Iraq
is meant to advance US interests, and not the national interests of the
Iraqi people. The total lack of even local elections in Iraq permits
ordinary Iraqis no legitimate self-representation, and so turns them toward
violent militias and extreme religious leaders for representation.

We are asking you to call the President, your US Senators and you
Congressmember and urge them to change US policy in Iraq: to cease fire,
transition to UN oversight and control of the occupation and power transfer,
and establish legitimate, local elections that allow Iraqis immediate,
democratic self-determination .

The White House comment line: 202/456-1111 or at 202/456-2580.
The Capitol switchboard: 202/225-3121 or 202/224-3121.

Please call today. Iraqis and US troops need our help!
Thanks and Peace,
Phil Steger
Executive Director, Friends for a Non-violent World

oppressive political system to gain unprecedented rights and eventually
emerged as the governing political party. The presentations will be followed

Come to the Lake Street/Marshall Ave. Bridge ? Special Vigil
Wednesday, April 14 - 4:30 - 5:30 pm
Over the Mississippi River between Minneapolis and St. Paul

IRAQ AT THE BOILING POINT:
End the Occupation of Iraq and Bring the Troops Home Now!

The events sweeping Iraq in opposition to the U.S.-led occupation have led
to the White House and Pentagon ordering an escalation of U.S. military
action in Iraq. Hundreds of Iraqis have been killed. A large number of U.S.
troops have also died and there is no let up in sight.

The U.S. war in Iraq was never about terrorism, weapons of mass destruction
or democracy. The war was fought, and the occupation continues, due to U.S.
interest in controlling the oil and other resources of the region. The
Iraqi people do not want the occupation, and they have a right to
self-determination without foreign interference.

A weekly peace vigil is sponsored by Twin Cities Peace Campaign and Women
Against Military Madness. The April 14 special vigil has also been endorsed
by the Anti-War Committee, Iraq Peace Action Coalition, Pax Christi Twin
Cities, St. Joan of Arc WAMM/Peacemakers, Veterans for Peace Chapter 27,
Women?s Political Alliance and others.

We hope you can come and bring your friends.
