A CITIZEN'S CAMPAIGN FOR VOTING (AND COUNTING) RIGHTS" Corporations with partisan leadership have been allowed to take over our election system. Multiple knowledgeable people have raised the alarm about the potential ease of manipulation of vote-counting software in any computerized voting system, and the need for a paper record of votes. This workshop will present a brief history of the rise of computerized voting, fraud issues from elections beginning in 1996, especially the presidential election of 2004; the role of the 2002 Help America Vote Act (HAVA) in the rush to purchase new machines; congressional bills and suggestions being offered to ³improve² our elections; and most important, what citizens can do to bring about real reform. Given by Leslie Reindl, Chair, Women's International League for Peace & Freedom, MN Metro Branch; writer/producer of video ³(Mis)Counting the Vote: Stealing Elections in America² (2002). OCTOBER 17 2:00 PM TRAM NGUYEN READS FROM HER NEW BOOK: “WE ARE ALL SUSPECTS NOW: UNTOLD STORIES FROM IMMIGRANT COMMUNITIES AFTER 9/11” The book reveals the human cost of the domestic war on terror. With a forward by novelist Edwidge Danticat, the book reports that one-sixth of the community of Midwood, Brooklyn has departed since September 11th. In an ironic reversal of the American dream, this immigrant community now lives in fear witnessing the unjust detainment or deportation of family members, friends and neighbors. Tram is the editor of ColorLines Magazine and an award-winning writer with a particular interest in race, immigration and organizing. Her writing has appeared in many anthologies. She received her B.A. in 1996 from UCLA in English with a minor in Asian American Studies. University of Minnesota Coffman Union Book store, General Books section 300 Washington Ave., SE Mpls **** 6. TUESDAY, OCTOBER 18 12:15pm-1:30pm "CHANGING ENERGY POLICY TO BENEFIT THE ENVIRONMENT AND HUMAN HEALTH" with Prof. Daniel Kammen, PhD of Berkeley. Energy use is the primary driver of local and global environmental change. It’s also a leading cause of human disease. Yet, current patterns of energy use are widely seen as difficult to alter. Kammen will argue that the energy industry is highly capable of change and that relatively simple policy changes may go a long way. The needed catalyst for progress may rest on our interest in changing the status quo. Free and open to the public. TUESDAY, OCTOBER 18 6:30 to 8:30 PM COMMUNITY MEETING ON NEW CAMPAIGN TO STOP THE CONSTITUIONAL AMENDMENT BANNING GAY MARRIAGE. Sponsored by OutFront Minnesota. The next 13 months are critical for GLBT equality. This spring's legislative session marks the third year in a row that Minnesotans face a constitutional amendment that would ban marriage, civil unions, and all other forms of legal recognition for same-sex couples. OutFront Minnesota is leading the fight to not only stop the amendment, but to increase the power, visibility, and sheer number of people actively working for GLBT equality. By working together we can send the message to our elected officials and the rest of the country that Minnesota does not discriminate. GLBT equality is a critical part of the equation for creating a better society. The key to success in the next 13 months and beyond is your involvement in this campaign.
