#2 UM Lecture: "Changing Energy Policy to Benefit the Environment and
Human Health."
Prof. Daniel Kammen, PhD (University of California, Berkeley)
Tuesday, October 18, 2005
12:15pm-1:30pm
the Theater at the UM St. Paul Student Center.
(parking is available in the Gortner Ramp on Gortner Ave., across Buford
Ave. from the Student Center. Maps at
http://onestop.umn.edu/Maps/index.html.)

Energy use is the primary driver of local and global environmental
change.
It is also a leading cause of human disease.  Yet current patterns
of energy use are widely seen as extremely difficult to alter
significantly.
In this talk Prof. Kammen will examine the basis for this view of energy
"stasis."  He will argue that far from being a "supertanker" unable to
alter
course, the energy industry is highly capable of change. Indeed,
relatively
simple policy changes may go a long way. The needed catalyst for
progress
may simply be our interest in changing the status quo.

Prof. Kammen is founding director of the Renewable and Appropriate
Energy Laboratory (RAEL). His work focuses on the science and policy
of clean, renewable energy systems, energy efficiency, the role of
energy in national energy policy, international climate debates,
and the use and impacts of energy sources and technologies on
development
in Africa & Latin America.

The event is free and open to the public. Reservations are strongly
encouraged.
Lunches are provided to those who RSVP by October 11, 2005. Those
without
reservations are welcome to attend, but should bring a lunch.
Registration
is required if you wish to receive continuing education credits (CLE or
CEU).

#6 UU Ministry for Earth seeks Regional Coordinator for Prairie Star
District
 from Claudia Kern, Aug. 13

UU Ministry for Earth (formerly the Seventh Principle Project) has funds
to recruit and train volunteer Regional Coordinators to help deliver
UU Ministry for Earth programming, offer Green Sanctuary
support, and facilitate collaboration between neighboring congregations
locally. The role of a Regional Coordinator will allow committed
supporters of the UU Ministry for Earth
to deepen their volunteer commitment a little nearer to home.

An initial two-day training for Coordinators to be held in Boston,
November 18-20, will provide trainees with the appropriate tools,
strategies, and resources to confidently assume the role of Regional
Coordinator. Housing, meals, and carbon offsets for travel will be
provided
by UU Ministry for Earth; however, trainees will be asked to cover
transportation costs. In addition to this initial training, Regional
Coordinators
will receive ongoing support and resources.
