Hello EcoMind-ers, In the last few days the US House has stripped some $20 billion from the planned Infrastructure component of $850 billion Stimulus Package. It appears this was cut to fund tax breaks. Transit funding appears to have borne the brunt of the cut. Highway funding appears untouched. This has long-term climate change implications and development/sprawl impacts. Here is a good blog post for info: http://wonkroom.thinkprogress.org/2009/01/22/oberstar-transit/ I understand, however, that the US Senate may be able to reinstate some or all of the transit funding cut. Please do what you can to alert your networks to contact your Senators to say : Senator _______, Please restore full funding to transit initiatives in the Infrastructure initiative of the Economic Stimulus Package. Funding light rail and regional and intercity transit will provide long term benefits to our nation - in jobs now, and in addressing climate change for our and our children's future. Thank you, ________" (Or similar wording). Senator Klobuchar is at: http://klobuchar.senate.gov/emailamy.cfm For non-Minnesotans, find your Senator at: http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm Greening the stimulus needs to not be a slogan or window dressing. Slashing transit funding is not a way to be serious about Greening the Stimulus. Thanks, -Ralph Ralph Wyman MUUSJA Director/Organizer 612-998-6624 www.muusja.org
