UUA President Issues Statement of Support for the International Day of
Climate Action
Issued: October 13, 2009

Rev. Peter Morales, president of the Unitarian Universalist Association
(UUA), released the following statement today:

The Unitarian Universalist Association enthusiastically endorses the
International Day of Climate Action and the 350.org campaign. Unitarian
Universalists recognize the moral imperative to advocate for the drastic
reduction of carbon emissions. To mark the International Day of Climate
Action, over forty Unitarian Universalist congregations will join with
thousands of people around the world in calling for an international
commitment to stopping global warming.

Respect for the interdependent web of all existence is a fundamental
principle of Unitarian Universalism. The delicate balance of life on Earth
is threatened, and with it the wellbeing of all people, especially the
poorest and most vulnerable. Religious communities have an obligation to
take action now for the future of the planet and humanity.

The challenge of confronting global warming is daunting. But we must have
faith that a healthy future for our planet and for all its people is still
possible provided that we make the major changes that are now absolutely
necessary. We owe nothing less to one another and to future generations.

Rev. Morales will be delivering the interfaith prayer at the 350 Climate
Convocation at 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 18th, 2009, in the Harvard
University Memorial Church in Cambridge, MA.

The Unitarian Universalist Association is a faith community of more than
1,000 self-governing congregations that bring to the world a vision of
religious freedom, tolerance and social justice.

The UUA has supported environmental protection for over forty years. Our
association voted in 2006 for a Statement of Conscience on the Threat of
Global Warming/Climate Change acknowledging the danger of global warming and
pledging to take action.
