UUA-UUSC Gulf Coast Volunteer Program to continue under local UU
leadership

Management of a joint UUA-UUSC program that has placed some 2,000
volunteers in Louisiana and Mississippi to help with rebuilding and
recovery efforts after the 2005 hurricanes is being transferred to local
leadership. It will be stewarded by the Greater New Orleans Unitarian
Universalists through its New Orleans Rebirth Volunteer Center.

The KatrinaRitaVille Express visits Alabama for Gulf Coast housing

Gulf Coast activists joined UUSC staff in Birmingham, Ala., on May 2,
2008, to raise awareness about the continuing need for recovery work and
financial assistance in the Gulf Coast. Derrick Evans brought The
KatrinaRitaVille Express, a FEMA trailer, to Birmingham as part of his
national FEMA-trailer road show to raise awareness about the plight of
those who are still living in toxic FEMA trailers.
Read an article about the visit in The Birmingham News.

UUSC efforts in Myanmar provide a lifeline after Cyclone Nargis

Despite the Myanmar government?s reluctance to accept international aid
for cyclone relief, UUSC is disbursing relief funds to partners working
on the ground in the country. This aid is providing emergency food, clean
water, and much-needed medical aid to the people in the townships of
Bogalay, Bathein, Dedaye, Kungyangone, Laputta, and Pyapone in the
Irrawaddy Delta region of southern Myanmar, which was hard hit by the
storm. UUSC is also working with its partners to protect and provide for
unaccompanied children.

UUSC to push for responsible end to Iraq war at UUA General Assembly 2008

Join UUSC for General Assembly 2008 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where we
will be examining the human cost of the war in Iraq. Participate in
activist trainings and attend discussion with speakers who have firsthand
knowledge of the toll this war is taking.

JustJourneys participants investigate labor rights, economic justice in
Mexico

On a recent JustJourney to Mexico, participants explored the ways
corporate-led globalization and free-trade agreements like NAFTA have
affected the lives of Mexicans, particularly women maquila workers, small
farmers, and migrants.
