On the off chance anyone is able to attend, please let Chuck know. Thanks. Peace, Madeline Women Against Military Madness--Tackling Torture at the Top Committee: With respect to torture accountability, the coming year is important. It was in 2002 that, as official policy, torture began to be "legalized," authorized, ordered and committed. The statute of limitations on the Federal Torture Statute is eight years. Beginning some time in 2010, we officially will become a nation that sanctions torture. A meeting has been scheduled with Joe Campbell, a staffperson of Senator Klobuchar, for Tues., Jan. 5, 10:00 a.m. to discuss this issue. It is expected to last about a half hour. Senator Klobuchar is a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, which oversees the Justice Department. You or representatives of your group are invited to attend this meeting as well. Please let me know if you will be joining us. Among the proposals we may discuss at this meeting are 1) legislation to extend the statute of limitations to ten years, as Rep. Conyers suggested at the beginning of 2009 ]http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2172287/posts; 2) the Judiciary Committee, in its oversight capacity, putting pressure on Attorney General Holder to make the prosecution for torture and torture conspiracy a priority; and 3) Senator Klobuchar becoming more outspoken on this issue, which currently is not mentioned anywhere on her website. Any other suggestions you might have would be most welcome. Please let me know as soon as possible if you or members of your group will be attending this meeting, as well as how many you expect will come. It is important that the Senator appreciates there is widespread support for action on this issue. Please email me or call at any time.
