Lakoff nails it again! Makes me think about Karen Armstrong's efforts re: "Charter for Compassion" - drawing on people from all religions to come together for the common good based on joint commitments to compassion (...and related principles - our UU principles fit well...). Speaking of Faith (NPR) has been following Armstrong's work and sharing the discussions. Lakoff points out that tax "cuts" are TAX SHIFTS (away from the top income groups, onto the shoulders of less wealthy groups....) and shrinking government is SHIFTING GOVERNING (to corporations and corporate interests rather than public interests....) - this anlaysis and these approaches to messaging for public dicussions are huge helps re: getting everyone to think about what we want our U.S. democracy to look like. January has not been a good month for progressives - or for U.S. democracy - to put it lightly. Lakoff's article helps decrease the nausea a bit - not because we are where we need to be, but because the larger view brings some hope. Thanks for sending the link, Bob.
