"CORPORATIONS IN OUR ELECTIONS: WHO IS (MIS)/(NOT) COUNTING OUR VOTES? A
CITIZEN'S CAMPAIGN FOR VOTING (AND COUNTING) RIGHTS"

Corporations with partisan leadership have been allowed to take over our
election system. Multiple knowledgeable people have raised the alarm about
the
potential ease of manipulation of vote-counting software in any computerized
voting system, and the need for a paper record of votes. This workshop will
present a brief history of the rise of computerized voting, fraud issues
from elections beginning in 1996, especially the presidential election of
2004;
the role of the 2002 Help America Vote Act (HAVA) in the rush to purchase new
machines; congressional bills and suggestions being offered to ³improve² our
elections; and most important, what citizens can do to
bring about real reform. Given by Leslie Reindl, Chair, Women's
International League for Peace & Freedom, MN Metro Branch; writer/producer of
video
³(Mis)Counting the Vote: Stealing Elections in America² (2002). Sponsored by
IMPACT (Ideas to Mobilize People Against Corporate Tyranny) and MN Metro WILPF.

TRAM NGUYEN READS FROM HER NEW BOOK: “WE ARE ALL SUSPECTS NOW:
UNTOLD STORIES FROM IMMIGRANT COMMUNITIES AFTER 9/11”
The book reveals the human cost of the domestic war on terror. With a
forward by novelist Edwidge Danticat, the book reports that one-sixth of the
community of Midwood, Brooklyn has departed since September 11th. In an
ironic
reversal of the American dream, this immigrant community now lives in fear
witnessing the unjust detainment or deportation of family members, friends and
neighbors. Tram is the editor of ColorLines Magazine and an award-winning
writer
with a particular interest in race, immigration and organizing. Her writing
has appeared in many anthologies. She received her B.A. in 1996 from UCLA in
English with a minor in Asian American Studies.

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 18
12:15pm-1:30pm
"CHANGING ENERGY POLICY TO BENEFIT THE ENVIRONMENT AND HUMAN HEALTH" with
Prof. Daniel Kammen, PhD of Berkeley. Energy use is the primary driver of
local and global environmental change. It’s also a leading cause of human
disease. Yet, current patterns of energy use are widely seen as difficult to
alter.
Kammen will argue that the energy industry is highly capable of change and
that relatively simple policy changes may go a long way. The needed catalyst
for progress may rest on our interest in changing the status quo.
Free and open to the public. Register by October 11, 2005 to
lawvalue [at] umn.edu or 612.625.0055 for program, lunch, and 1 continuing

COMMUNITY MEETING ON NEW CAMPAIGN TO STOP THE CONSTITUIONAL AMENDMENT
BANNING GAY MARRIAGE. Sponsored by OutFront Minnesota. The next 13 months are
critical for GLBT equality. This spring's legislative session marks the third
year in a row that Minnesotans face a constitutional amendment that would ban
marriage, civil unions, and all other forms of legal recognition for same-sex
couples. OutFront Minnesota is leading the fight to not only stop the
amendment, but to increase the power, visibility, and sheer number of people
actively working for GLBT equality. By working together we can send the
message to
our elected officials and the rest of the country that Minnesota does not
discriminate. GLBT equality is a critical part of the equation for creating a
better society. The key to success in the next 13 months and beyond is your
involvement in this campaign.

MPP IS RAMPING UP TO GET OUT THE VOTE ON NOVEMBER 8
MPP is getting ready to launch our Get Out the Vote effort in Minneapolis
and St. Paul on November 8. As many of you know, MPP was able to mobilize
700 volunteers who made nearly 30,000 contacts last year! That’s a lot of
contacts – and a lot of voters. MPP’s goal is to do the same again this
year,
though we expect this will be a slightly scaled down version. Currently,
MPP is securing three sites in Minneapolis and St. Paul: YWCA Midtown
(MPLS), Dayton Presbyterian, and West Side Citizens Organization (both in St.
Paul). In order to make our GOTV effort a reality, MPP needs your help!
Attached to this email you will find a volunteer sign up sheet for November 8.

Please circulate this to your networks and within your organizations. Stay
tuned for more updates as Election Day gets closer…

THE TRUTH ABOUT COLOMBIA: REPORT FROM SUMMER DELEGATION
Tsione Wolde-Michael, Marty Hoerth & Erika Zurawski went to Colombia this
summer. They learned from human rights activists, trade unionists, and
campesinos (peasants) about the real impacts of U.S. foreign policy. Since
2000, the U.S. has spent over $3 billion on military aid to the Colombian
government's war against its own people. U.S. tax dollars are used by
paramilitary death squads to terrorize people who speak out against
U.S.-backed free trade policies or for democratic rights. You're invited
to hear what the Bush Administration doesn't want you to know - the
truth about Colombia.

Come at 6:00 pm to order dinner and chat with fellow activists.

REPORT BACK: INTERNATIONAL NETWORK OF ARTISTS IN RESISTANCE
Ten local artists have recently returned from an international solidarity
exchange, sponsored by the Babylon Art Collective. They spent a month in
Mexico, first meeting with Mexican artists at a conference entitled "Artists
in
Resistance," then traveling to
communities in Chiapas, Mexico. There they painted murals representing the
Zapatista struggle for autonomy and preservation of the lifestyle of
indigenous Mexicans. The mission of the conference was to bring together
political
artists from around the world to form an alliance that will further creative
resistance as a part of the anti-globalization movement. The conference was
co-sponsored by the Art Across Borders project of the Babylon Art Collective
and L.I.P. Gargola of Mexico City.
