STARTING NOW
UU ECOMINDS CAMPAIGN TO PASS A RENEWABE ENERGY STANDARD (RES)
EcoMinds is working with citizens and United Steelworker organizers in
critical suburbs to let suburban legislators know that most Minnesotans
support
RES. The RES was voted down by a narrow margin in 2005, but we can help
suburban citizens send a strong message to their legislators that moving
toward
clean, home-grown energy sources will create jobs and make Minnesotans less
vulnerable to fluctuating energy prices.
Upcoming RES Campaign Activities include:

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 22

FIGHT AFFORDABLE HOUSING FUND COMPROMISE THAT WIDELY RESTRICTS VOTER
REGISTRATION
The Affordable Housing Fund (AHF) is a new source of money that will be made
available to Minnesota for affordable housing production, preservation, and
rehabilitation. But nonprofit and public organizations that do voter reg
with their own funds, won’t be able to receive grants from AHF.
Nonprofits should NOT be prevented from conducting nonpartisan voter
registration activities or from affiliating with organizations that do. PARTS
OF THE
BILL WILL BE HEARD IN THE HOUSE THE WEEK OF OCTOBER 24.
CALL The National Housing Trust Fund Campaign at 1-866-864-NHTF (toll-free)
and ask to speak to your Representative’s Legislative Director or Housing
Staff to deliver this message:
“I have learned that language that will restrict an organization’s right
to
engage in voter registration may be included in H.R. 1461 when it goes to
the floor for a vote.
“I oppose any language that restricts voter registration and freedom of
affiliation by nonprofit and public organizations when using their own funds
“I urge Representative ________ to tell House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-IL)
and Financial Services Chairman Mike Oxley (R-OH) to reject these
restrictions and bring the bill to the floor for a vote without this
language.”
