ALITO CONFIRMATION On December 12, the UUA announced its opposition to the confirmation of Samuel Alito to the U.S. Supreme Court. The UUA's opposition is based on concerns over civil liberties, including religious liberty, the right to privacy, and due process. For full coverage of our opposition, including our decision making process, visit: http://www.uua.org/news/2005/051212_alito/index.html. **** 2. DOMESTIC SPYING … On Wednesday, December 21, the ACLU released FBI documents obtained through Freedom of Information Act requests that confirm that the FBI is using its counterterrorism resources to monitor and infiltrate peaceful activist groups such as … Greenpeace and United for Peace and Justice. It is now clear that the FBI has expanded its definition of "domestic terrorism" to include citizens and groups that participate in lawful protests or civil disobedience. "The FBI should use its resources to investigate credible threats to national security instead of spending time tracking Americans who criticize government policy, or monitoring groups that have not broken the law," said Ann Beeson, Associate Legal Director of the ACLU. "Labeling law abiding groups and their members 'domestic terrorists' is not only irresponsible, it has a chilling effect on the vibrant tradition of political dissent in this country." **** 3. FEDERAL BUDGET As Evangelical Christian the Rev. Jim Wallis, says, "Budgets are moral documents that reflect what we care about." The latest budget cuts spending by less than one-half of 1% over the next five years, with the poor bearing the burden of the cuts. Most of the "savings" come from changes to Medicaid, child support enforcement and foster care -- whereas original targets for belt-tightening, such as pharmaceutical companies and private insurers, largely escaped sanction. The budgetwould allow states to impose new fees on Medicaid recipients, cut federal child support enforcement funds, impose new work requirements on state welfare programs and squeeze student lenders. President Bush and Congressional Republicans have vowed to push for more tax cuts. How does this reflect our priorities as a nation, and as people of faith? How does cutting social programs that serve low-income people to make room for tax cuts for the wealthy square with our religious imperative to care for those in need? [Note: for coverage of UU ministers getting arrested to protest the immoral budget: http://www.uua.org/news/2005/051214_budget/index.html. **** 4. WAR IN IRAQ It doesn't make sense to stay the course if the course is wrong. Supporters of a plan for withdrawal want victory just as much as Bush. In fact, we believe that victory can ONLY be achieved by getting out, as more than 2/3rds of Iraqis now want us to leave. In order for the Iraqi people to trust their government, that government must be seen as independent from American influence. The large-scale presence and activities of the US military are fueling the insurgency. We can't build democratic institutions with military force, which is why we need a change of course. We need to focus our resources on economic and political stability, both of require the US to dramatically scale back troop levels. We don't need to leave immediately, but we DO need to show the Iraqi people that we have a timetable for withdrawal. President Bush has said we'll leave when the job is done, but he refuses to declare that the US won't maintain permanent bases in Iraq. It is past-time for Congress to have a serious debate about US policy in Iraq. This war has cost the lives of more than 2,200 American servicemembers, more than 30,000 Iraqi civilians by the President's own admission, and hundreds of billions of dollars. The budget just passed by Congress doesn't even include money for the war. The Administration needs to be held accountable for its conduct of the war, and we the people deserve a say in how long we'll devote massive human and financial resources to it.
